Why we built Tiered discount bundles

Extensive research and analysis of Bundles usage revealed a gap in our current Volume discount approach. While effective for encouraging repeat purchases of the same product, this model fails to account for a significant portion of actual customer shopping behavior.

Most shoppers want to grab a bit of this and a bit of that, so they simply skip the deal and move on.

Tiered Discount bundles solve this by applying discount logic based on everything already in the cart, not just items from a specific widget. Any qualifying add-to-cart action across your store counts toward the discount tier. Shoppers feel rewarded for every item they add, which creates natural momentum to keep going.

How Tiered discount bundles work

create tiered discount bundles in boost commerce

When you create a Tiered Discount bundle, you set a threshold type and the corresponding discount levels. There are two threshold models to choose from:

  • Quantity-based: Shoppers unlock higher discounts as they add more items. For example, buy 2 items and get 5% off, buy 3 and get 10% off, buy 5 and get 15% off.
  • Subtotal-based: Discounts kick in when the cart reaches a certain spend level. For example, spend $100 and get 5% off, spend $200 and get 10% off, spend $400 and get 15% off.

You can set up to 3 tiers per campaign. The bundle widget keeps shoppers in the loop at every stage with a live progress bar that updates as they add items, shows which tier they have reached, and confirms with a "Congrats! You have received a discount" message when a threshold is hit. The final CTA directs straight to checkout.

Three scope options to fit any strategy

With Boost’s Tiered discount bundles, you decide which products the tiered discount applies to:

  • Specific Products: Handpick 2 to 10 products to include in the bundle. Great for curated upsell moments on product pages or search results.
  • Specific Collections: Apply the discount to a whole collection. Every product in that collection automatically qualifies, making it ideal for seasonal pushes or category-wide promotions.
  • All Products: Cast the widest net and apply the tiered discount across your entire store. Perfect for sitewide sales events and peak shopping periods.

Where shoppers see it

The Tiered Discount widget displays as a vertical app block on product pages and as a horizontal layout on search result pages. It syncs with your shopper's cart in real time, so whether a customer adds a product to the bundle from a collection page or anywhere else in the store, the progress bar reflects it instantly.

Best practices to get the most from Tiered Discounts

  • Start with a low entry point. Make the first tier easy to unlock. A low barrier like "Buy 2, get 5% off" gets shoppers into the habit of adding more and creates the momentum to reach higher tiers.
  • Use subtotal thresholds for high-AOV stores. If your average order value is already solid, subtotal-based tiers are a natural fit. They encourage shoppers to stretch their spend without feeling like they need to pile on cheap items to qualify.
  • Pair tiered discounts with specific collections during sales. Applying a tiered discount to a seasonal or bestseller collection is one of the fastest ways to move inventory with intention. You control the scope, and shoppers get a clear reason to explore more within that range.
  • Use the progress bar as a selling tool. The built-in visual progress bar does the persuasion work for you. Shoppers can see exactly how close they are to the next tier, which naturally nudges them to add one more item rather than heading to checkout.

Test quantity vs. subtotal thresholds by category. For lower-priced accessories or consumables, quantity thresholds tend to work better. For higher-priced items, subtotal thresholds feel more natural. Try both and see what drives more completions for your product mix.

Tiered discount bundles are a brand-new bundle type that rewards shoppers with progressively better deals as they add more to their cart. Unlike volume discounts, tiered discounts work across different products, so customers can mix and match freely and still unlock savings based on their total quantity or order value. You can apply a tiered discount to specific products, specific collections, or your entire store catalog, giving you full flexibility to run promotions at any scale. This is one of the most shopper-friendly incentive structures in eCommerce, and now it's available right inside Boost.
