Rule-based Recommendations now support ‘Include’ logic

Feature Enhancement

Merchants with large catalogs previously struggled with recommendation rules because the logic was only subtractive. To show specific products, you had to manually exclude every other collection, tag, or metafield value, which was an unsustainable workflow for complex stores.

This update introduces additive logic. Instead of defining exclusions, you now simply choose what to include, and the model automatically disregards everything else.

What changed in Rule-based Recommendations

Each of the affected rule toggles, Same collection, Same tags, and Same product metafield value (1, 2, and 3), now has a Filtering logic dropdown with two options: Include (set as the default) or Exclude.

  • Include logic: Selecting Include reveals a second dropdown to specify recommendation values. Options default to "All" for collections, tags, and metafields, allowing you to choose specific items or search for exact metafield values from your store. The engine then generates suggestions using only this selected input pool for each product page.
  • Exclude logic: This matches previous behavior, relabeling "Ignore" fields as "Exclude" for consistency. All existing data and outputs remain unchanged. Existing "Ignore" rules will continue to work seamlessly with the new labels.

How to put it to use

To use ‘Include’ logic, navigate to a Rule-based Frequently Bought Together or Related Items widget. Within the Same collection, Same tags, or Same product metafield value toggles, you will find a Filtering logic dropdown.

Select Include and specify the values for recommendations. Once saved, the widget will target these inputs.

This dynamic configuration replaces the need for manually hand-picked widgets on individual pages, providing collection- or metafield-specific results without per-page maintenance.

You can now choose to include specific collections, tags, or metafield values in your recommendation rules, instead of being limited to excluding everything you do not want. This applies to both Frequently Bought Together and Related Items widgets across the product page, cart page, and cart drawer. For merchants managing recommendations at scale, this change cuts setup time significantly and gives you more precise control previously only possible through time-consuming manual exclusions.
