AI-based recommendation
Rule-based recommendation
How it benefits merchants
More ways to increase order value: FBT is great for accessories and bundles-in-the-moment. Related products help shoppers round out their choice or swap to a better fit.
Automation or control, your call:
The AI primary algorithm is fixed to AI-based Frequently bought together (with smart fallbacks).
Related products AI lets you choose between Alternative, Complementary, or both.
Rule-based mode provides attribute matching (collection, type, vendor, tags, metafields) so that recommendations stay on-brand.
Built for real storefront carts: Works with both slide-cart and pop-up cart layouts.
Best practices to get strong results
Pick the widget that matches the moment
Use Frequently bought together for add-ons that truly pair with what’s in the cart (cases, refills, accessories).
Use Related products when shoppers might still be deciding (similar styles, alternatives, complements).
Always set a fallback in AI mode If the AI lacks sufficient data, your secondary algorithm keeps the widget useful. Defaults include Bestsellers, with options such as Most viewed, Newest arrivals, and AI alternates, depending on the widget type.
Keep the list short and confident You can show 1-12 items, but most stores win with fewer. Start at 4-6 and adjust after you check performance.
Make it look like it belongs
Slide cart: 2 items per row is the default (range 1-2).
Popup cart: 4 items per row is the default (range 1-4).
Rule-based tip: start with two signals Turn on 2-3 rules first (such as the same product category + same tags). Too many rules can narrow results and leave your widget empty.

Cart Drawer upsells just got more flexible. Alongside Personalized Recommendations, you can now add Frequently bought together and Related products right inside the cart drawer, so shoppers see smart add-ons while they’re already deciding. Choose AI-powered suggestions when you want it automated, or go rule-based when you want tighter control. The goal is simple: make it easier to lift order value without making checkout feel pushy.
